As with most baby animals, it can be quite difficult to tell the difference between a male and female deer. Identifying the gender of a deer or other baby animal is called "sexing. Otherwise, there are a few other identifiers to looked for. Most young deer are referred to as fawns; however, young sika and red deer are referred to as calves.

How do you tell the sex of a wild fawn?

Penn State Deer-Forest Study
June 19, Using my keen eye and a good set of binoculars, I was able to sex this baby from yards away just by looking at the pattern of spots on its back. Spots arranged in a straight pattern signify a male while scattered or zigzag pattern of spots denote a female. The only way to tell the sex of a fawn is to inspect between its legs where the important parts are — just like the doctor did when you were born. In fact, it is impossible to distinguish the sex of newborns of most any species unless you physically examine them. And even then, it is sometimes still difficult. Seeing the chocolate brown coat dappled with white spots, it is hard to believe that it blends into anything.

Using Advanced Doe Management Strategies to Manipulate Fawn Sex Ratios
Despite its long, hot days, summer is a time of renewal within the whitetail world. Throughout North America, most does give birth in May or June, following a day gestation period. This is why fawns begin to become visible in most areas in July or August. Most hunters and deer managers give little thought to this important time of year.
